Then Jesus began to tell [the disciples] that the Son of Man must suffer many terrible things and be rejected by the elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of religious law. He would be killed, but three days later he would rise from the dead. As he talked about this openly with his disciples, Peter took him aside and began to reprimand him for saying such things.
Jesus turned around and looked at his disciples, then reprimanded Peter. “Get away from me, Satan!” he said. “You are seeing things merely from a human point of view, not from God’s.”
Key Thought
Peter reprimanded Jesus. Jesus then showed how important giving himself as a sacrifice for sin was to him as Messiah and Son of God. As a reprimand to Peter, he addressed him as Satan. Ouch! What a stinging rebuke! However, the orientation of Scripture is clear: Without the grace that comes from Jesus’ sacrificial death, men and women are under the influence and control of Satan. The majority rule of humanity is not going to agree with the will of God. The will of the LORD will always be accepted by only a minority of people, [1] even though it is God’s truth and God’s standard! We must open our eyes and ask the LORD to open our hearts to know his truth, his will, and his way.
Today’s Prayer
Teach me, O God, to know your truth. Open my heart to follow your will. Don’t let Satan blind me to your way, your truth, and your light. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
