[Jesus continued,] “What sorrow awaits you, Korazin and Bethsaida! For if the miracles I did in you had been done in wicked Tyre and Sidon, their people would have repented of their sins long ago, clothing themselves in burlap and throwing ashes on their heads to show their remorse. Yes, Tyre and Sidon will be better off on judgment day than you. And you people of Capernaum, will you be honored in heaven? No, you will go down to the place of the dead.”
Key Thought
Jesus seldom pronounced judgment so sternly and so clearly; yet here, he did so with great passion and clarity. He had done great miracles and taught God’s truth, but the people refused to believe in him and change their lives. Jesus was the embodiment of God’s love. However, part of love is being upset, concerned, and yes, even angry when those that we love choose destruction. By rejecting Jesus, the people in these cities chose death and destruction over deliverance. Let’s understand the stakes in the choices that we and other people make. We need to make every effort to keep our own lives pure and work for deliverance in the lives of those we influence now, as well as those that we can possibly influence in the future.
Today’s Prayer
O God, I am shocked and motivated to see Jesus’ sharp words and deep frustration. I know he left heaven to bring salvation and that his goal was not judgment (John 3:16-17). Yet I am constantly amazed at how often people I know choose their own way, the way of destruction, over Jesus’ grace and deliverance. Stir me to a deep concern for others, similar to what Jesus demonstrated. Please help me effectively communicate that concern to the lost around me with passion and love. Empower me to live my life aligned with your will as I follow Jesus’ example of how best to treat each person. In his name, I pray. Amen.
